Ōrewa athletics champions

Six Ōrewa College students have been named overall year-level champions following the school’s annual athletics day, held on site last week.

Students competed across a full programme of track and field events, including sprints, distance races, jumps and throws. The event brought together junior, intermediate and senior students for a day of participation and competition to close the athletics season.

Gemma Dunn was named Junior Girls Champion, with Ethan Heke taking the Junior Boys title. In the intermediate division, Elise Chapman secured the girls’ championship and Ryley Thomas the boys’. Senior honours went to Charlotte Robinson as Senior Girls Champion and Jordin Fitzpatrick as Senior Boys Champion.

Student Kayleigh Donaldson enjoyed the atmosphere of the event, saying “athletics is pretty awesome sauce,” while teacher James Wright said that it was “always a nice day seeing people connect through athletics”.

The event recognised both consistent performance across multiple disciplines and the wider participation of students throughout the day. It marks the conclusion of this year’s athletics season at Ōrewa College.
